By: Rayahna Tryka

The first Annual WNYIT Conference was held at Erie community College on January 10th. It brought together students from across Western New York to share their knowledge of technology in schools with their peers. Twenty schools and approximately one-hundred and fifty students from as far as Grand Island to Ellicottville and downtown Buffalo gathered for the first annual Western New York Informational Technology conference. Students chose sessions to participate in and they received information from their own peers. This student ran conference was just another element to the Education Under Construction program ran here at Alden High School. Different workshops were taught by students and educators to change the educational technology model throughout the region. WNYIT brings out the true potential in student’s education and knowledge- it’s much more than just a test or another grade in the book. Just a few of the sponsors of this conference consist of Microsoft, NYSCATE, Seimens, Lancaster High School Techsperts, the Depew Tech Support Team, the Holland Tech Support Team and our very own Atlas Team here at Alden. Our students presented on major similarities and differences between Microsoft and Google Enterprise solutions. A few also discussed the importance of our One to The World Initiative with the surface pros encouraging others to build better habits and set goals to start implementing similar practices in other schools.  They also focused on understanding the capabilities of Google’s sources versus Microsoft’s Outlook Email, OneNote and more. Aidan Hart and Sophie Turton covered a presentation about how to prepare students for jobs after high school. They gave fellow peers a look into the Atlas Team and explained the befits of having a student led team. Other students explained how to make android apps and add them to an android phone and some sessions discussed drone technology for students interested in becoming drone pilots in the future and students were able to participate in digital scavenger hunts around the campus using the web-based platform app, Goosechase on their phones. Presentations ranged from learning how to properly communicate through social media to focusing on mental health to learning the basics of 3D modeling. Dr. Andrew Wheelock is a Technology Integrator at Western New York Regional Information Center. He’s interested in educational technology, and k-12 education as a whole.  He was a huge part of making the conference possible and developing the activities taken place that day to their full potential. The WNYIT Conference was a true display of many students and leaders coming together from all different backgrounds to share knowledge with each other. This terrific conference was for students and ran by students.

Scholastic Bowl-Dogs http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11754/news/scholastic-bowl-dogs/ http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11754/news/scholastic-bowl-dogs/#respond Fri, 14 Feb 2020 13:36:10 +0000 http://wacs.aldenschools.org/?p=11754 Here at Alden High School, students have plenty of clubs and extracurricular activities to choose from. However, it seems that many students are unaware of just how many opportunities exist. One club in particular is helping students work as a team, and utilize knowledge from both inside and outside of the classroom. Scholastic Bowl is a club that competes in academic trivia against schools throughout Genessee County. They answer questions based on anything from typical school subjects, to pop culture and random trivia. The team consists of members, Charlie Freeman, Austin Young, Kristina Wilson, and Michael Frisicaro who meet after school once a week. Practices are held from late October through December. Then the team competes on Wednesday or Thursday evenings throughout January and February.  The matches last approximately 1 hour and consists of 3 rounds. Students use a buzzer to take turns answering free response questions. Each team may only ring in one time to answer a question, the first team to answer the question correctly receives 10 points.  Round two is a lightening round.  The team with the lowest score has the first choice of 4 sets of questions. The team must have one spokesperson to answer the questions.  Ten questions are read and the team has 1 minute to answer as many as they can correctly. In their most recent Scholastic Bowl match, Alden came out on top with a score of 240 points. Scholastic Bowl is always looking for new members, so if your interested in proving your knowledge, talk to Mrs. Mertz. We’re Taylor Tyburski and Matt Robertson reporting for WACS News.

Alden Students Hit the Ice http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11741/uncategorized/alden-students-take-on-ice-skating/ http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11741/uncategorized/alden-students-take-on-ice-skating/#respond Thu, 13 Feb 2020 16:07:58 +0000 http://wacs.aldenschools.org/?p=11741 On Thursday February 6th, I traveled to Cornerstone Arena in Lockport for a fun ice skating event. We were pulled out of our classes for the bus at around 9am to depart for the rink. Traveling with me were members of the Iroquois/Alden Varsity team. Aaron Wojtkowiak, Austin Ward, and Billy Froman, several Alden students, teachers, and administrators. When we arrived, everyone was excited to get on the ice, but first the staff at Cornerstone Arena had to hand out skates and helmets. While this was happening, the hockey players gathered walkers and carried them out to the ice. The walkers are used to provide stability and they help to build confidence. The hockey players taught simple skating techniques and provided positive feedback to all the questions that were asked. All the people making their skating debut picked up the skill extremely fast. One student went from a walker to skating on his own in about 15 minutes. When the buzzer sounded and it was time to get off the ice, everyone went to the main lobby to eat lunch. When lunch concluded, we boarded the buses that headed back to school. This event was a lot of fun and I would definitely go again if I got the opportunity to. Hope to see everyone back on the ice!

On The Road: NYSTEA Student Conference http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11733/news/on-the-road-nystea-student-conference/ http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11733/news/on-the-road-nystea-student-conference/#respond Tue, 11 Feb 2020 16:55:21 +0000 http://wacs.aldenschools.org/?p=11733 This year WACS News decided to go road to the NYSTEA student conference 2020. I was accompanied by 14 other students on our way to a resort in the Catskill Mountains to learn a little more about the professional musical theater world from trained professionals.  The New York State Theatre Education Association hosts a weekend getaway for theatre lovers all around New York State to learn new ways to express their many talents.  Professionals come to teach dance, vocal strategies, tech and stage crew tips and tricks, as well as character improvement classes. Including college arts audition and showcase opportunities. Students are given the chance to make new friends from schools all over the state as well as meeting new colleges.  While on the long bus ride I asked a couple of first year attendee sophomores what their expectations of NYSTEA are and what they are looking forward to the most. Aubrey Matthewson, Amelia Kelley, and Dylan Zelinski all enjoyed their first NYSTEA trip experience and highly recommend it for those in the future. While attending the conference students had the opportunity to take 5 classes. Including character, improv, performance, dance, and tech workshops. Including a Red Ribbon Banquet dinner and dance Saturday night.  The Alden Theater Department was very excited to have 5 three year ambassadors going into the weekend to help improve and make a difference at the conference. Concluding our time attending many student delegates were given the opportunity to preform a segment from one of the workshops taken.

Meet the Newsies: Joseph Pulitzer (Ep. 5) http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11714/audio/meet-the-newsies-joseph-pulitzer-ep-5/ http://wacs.aldenschools.org/11714/audio/meet-the-newsies-joseph-pulitzer-ep-5/#respond Thu, 06 Feb 2020 19:44:45 +0000 http://wacs.aldenschools.org/?p=11714 On this episode of Meet the Newsies I got a chance to meet Joseph Pulitzer and ask him about the show. A pompous businessman through and through, owns the World and is concerned solely with the bottom line. Katherine’s no-nonsense father, Pulitzer doesn’t sympathize with the strikers, but he does eventually – and grudgingly – respect Jack. Get your tickets at www.aldenschools.org/boxoffice
